Fatal Crash Between Train and Semi in Poweshiek County Highlights Crossing Safety Concerns
Authorities said the crash derailed two locomotives and 17 rail cars after the semi failed to yield at a railroad crossing.
On Wednesday, June 3, 2026, a semi-truck collided with an Iowa Interstate Railroad train near Victor, Iowa, killing 14-year-old Robert Orton and injuring his father, 38-year-old Michael Orton.
Iowa State Patrol investigators report the semi failed to yield at the railroad crossing, which features warning lights but lacks swing arms.
The impact derailed two locomotives and 17 rail cars, causing significant damage to the railroad tracks and forcing closure of Highway 21 between Interstate 80 and Highway 6.
Poweshiek County Sheriff Maschmann noted the tracks are "really messed up," adding that repairs and cleanup will keep the roadway closed for at least a couple of days.
The Iowa Department of Transportation posted a detour onto Old 6 Road to bypass the crash site while authorities continue investigating the accident's circumstances.
