'Supergirl' Projected to Lose as Much as $120M After Milly Alcock's 'Christian' Dad Comments
Warner Bros. says the film’s $38 million domestic opening and $62.6 million global debut put a $100 million to $120 million theatrical loss within reach.
Directed by Craig Gillespie, Supergirl debuted June 26 and is projected to lose between $100 million and $120 million after an underwhelming opening, Variety reported.
With a reported production budget of roughly $175 million and $75 million in marketing costs, the film earned only $38 million domestically and $30 million internationally in its opening weekend.
Star Milly Alcock faced backlash after telling Vanity Fair she is targeted by critics for "simply existing as a woman" in a male-dominated superhero franchise.
Last month, Alcock dismissed negative comments from users identifying as "Dad of four, Christian" on social media as "hilarious."
The film faces stiff summer competition from Disclosure Day, Minions & Monsters, and Moana, while analysts debate the cultural myths surrounding characters like Superman.
