Alabama Lawmakers Want the Death Penalty for Child Sex Crimes
ALABAMA, USA, JUL 31 – The bill aims to impose the death penalty for offenders targeting children under 12 amid child sex trafficking investigations, following similar laws in Florida and Tennessee.
- On Thursday, State Senator April Weaver and State Representative Matt Simpson proposed legislation at the Alabama State House to extend the death penalty to those convicted of raping or sodomizing children under the age of 12.
- Amid a disturbing investigation, seven people have been arrested after a child sex trafficking ring was uncovered in Bibb County last week involving at least ten victims in an underground storm shelter.
- Simpson highlighted that similar laws have recently been enacted or are in the legislation process in Florida, Tennessee, Idaho, Oklahoma and Arkansas.
- Both lawmakers say they have strong backing in both chambers and expect the bill to be fast-tracked during the next legislative session, while Marshall called it "an effective step in accountability" at the Montgomery news conference with Hoss Mack supporting.
- The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Kennedy v. Louisiana that death sentences for non-homicidal child rape are unconstitutional, but Simpson and Weaver believe passing the bill will challenge this precedent.
