Japan and South Korea agreed on joint naval drills, AI and unmanned systems cooperation, and annual reciprocal visits to address regional security challenges, officials said.
- On Friday, Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi and South Korean Defence Minister Ahn Gyu-back met at Yokosuka and agreed to upgrade defence cooperation, including joint search-and-rescue drills and personnel exchanges.
- In recent months, the two Asian allies have drawn closer under new leaders following September talks, as Beijing's stance on Taiwan and Pyongyang's military buildup with Russia increased regional pressures.
- They agreed to hold annual reciprocal visits and mutual meetings to promote defence cooperation, affirmed working toward peace and complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, and Koizumi sought candid exchanges to deepen trust.
- Ahn said he hopes the talks will move bilateral relations forward and expressed gratitude for Japan's help after an emergency landing at Naha Air Base, Okinawa.
- They reaffirmed the importance of trilateral cooperation with the United States, which affects regional calculations involving China and Taiwan amid Beijing's stance on Taiwan.
