Up to 42ºC in Spain, Nine Regions on Extreme Heat Alert
AEMET says the episode could last at least until Tuesday, with river valleys in the southwest forecast to reach 42C and wildfire risk rising.
- On Sunday, Spain's State Meteorological Agency activated orange and yellow alerts for the country's second summer heatwave, with temperatures climbing toward 42°C in southwestern river valleys.
- This weather episode meets formal heatwave criteria by exceeding the 95th percentile over 10% of the territory for three days, driven by a high-pressure ridge and a low-pressure "dana."
- Dangerous conditions span from Andalusia and Extremadura to Galicia and the Canary Islands, with authorities declaring high wildfire risks under the INFOCA plan in Andalusia.
- Tropical nights with lows of 27°C to 28°C offer little respite, compounding health risks after the first June heatwave that the MoMo monitoring system linked to nearly 900 deaths.
- Forecasters expect conditions to remain elevated across central and southern areas until Tuesday, with temperatures likely to bring a little relief gradually from Wednesday onwards.
