University student accused of stabbing housemate to death
Police say CCTV, forensic evidence and area searches led to the murder charge against the 23-year-old housemate.
- On Tuesday, Zack Coughlan, 23, appeared at Bristol Magistrates Court charged with murdering his housemate Jamie Collins, 21, who was found dead in a garden on April 9.
- Emergency services discovered Collins in a rear garden on Cleve Road, Filton, north Bristol, in the early hours of Thursday, April 9, after he sustained multiple stab wounds.
- Detective Chief Inspector Lucy Edgeworth of the Major Crime Investigation Team confirmed the Crown Prosecution Service authorized the murder charge after police identified Coughlan using CCTV footage and forensic evidence.
- Staff at the University of the West of England are providing support to students, while neighbourhood officers conduct high-visibility patrols in Filton. Edgeworth said those who knew Collins would be "understandably shocked and hugely saddened."
- Further enquiries are planned around Cleve Road over the coming days as the Major Crime Investigation Team requested the public respect the privacy of the Collins family during the investigation.
