University of Michigan Regent Calls for Pause of Proposed Data Center in Ypsilanti Twp.
The center will support research workloads and use about 10% of the electricity of a typical hyperscale commercial data center, university officials said.
- On Tuesday, the University of Michigan announced it selected the 144-acre Textile Road site in Ypsilanti Township for its $1.2 billion research computing center developed with Los Alamos National Laboratory.
- After evaluating the American Center for Mobility at Willow Run, U-M officials selected Textile Road for superior infrastructure proximity and development flexibility, rejecting the alternative site due to brownfield redevelopment requirements.
- U-M maintains the facility will use only about 10% of typical data center electricity and support scientific breakthroughs, yet township officials and residents allege the project targets a lower-income community for nuclear weapons research.
- Rep. Debbie Dingell, D-Ann Arbor, called the decision "deeply disturbing," while Ypsilanti Township Supervisor Brenda Stumbo described the announcement as a "call to action" for residents to oppose the project.
- Scheduled for Sept. 9 at the Ann Arbor Marriott Ypsilanti at Eagle Crest, a community town hall will mark the third public session on the project, providing residents a platform to address the university.
