Universal Credit, Child Benefit and more benefit payments set to increase
Universal Credit and key benefits will rise by inflation plus a top-up for at least four years, with weekly increases announced for various claimant groups.
- Earlier this month the Universal Credit Act became law, changing how standard allowance increases are decided, with Universal Credit claimants set to receive a combined 6.2% uplift next year.
- Uprating is set by September's inflation, and this year the September inflation figure was 3.8%, which the government adopted to decide benefit uplifts going forward.
- Single person aged 25+ will see their weekly allowance rise from £92 to £98, couples where one or both are aged 25+ from £145 to £154, and carer’s allowance from £81.90 to £83.30.
- Millions of DWP claimants across the UK will see higher payments next year, with Rachel Reeves framing the plans to aid vulnerable groups as the state pension rises 4.8%, adding around £500 annually.
- The health element faces cuts and freezes, with the health element of Universal Credit frozen and halved until 2029-30, Personal Independence Payment in England and Wales uprated only by inflation, and Child Benefit uncapped for families.
