United Airlines is paring back rewards for travelers who don’t have its credit card in MileagePlus overhaul

United boosts rewards for MileagePlus credit and debit cardholders with higher miles and up to 15% discounted award redemptions, aiming to attract loyal customers.

  • The United MileagePlus program overhaul, announced after about 18 months of work, aims to reward credit-card holders and elites with more miles and lower redemption rates.
  • With credit-card competition rising, Nocella said, "In the credit card space in general, a lot's changed over the last five to 10 years," to encourage United card use and provide compelling benefits.
  • Under the new rules, United credit cardholders can earn six miles per dollar, and MileagePlus 1K members with a United Club credit card get 1,000 miles, while elites get at least 15% off redemptions, the airline said.
  • Primary MileagePlus cardholders will earn more miles per dollar while customers without a United card will earn less, and business travelers booking on company credit cards may earn fewer or no miles.
  • United will follow American Airlines last year and Delta Air Lines by rewarding members based on spending and will show discounted award flights on the United website to highlight cardholder savings.
