The results of the YouGov survey are a blow to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) and Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder. Their CDU and CSU parties are in steep decline, while the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) is on an unprecedented rise. If the Bundestag elections were held now, the AfD would win with a 29 percent gain. The CDU/CSU would be a distant second with a 20 percent gain.

According to a survey by research firm YouGov, support for the right-wing populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has increased to 29 percent, and the party's lead over the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in second place is nine percentage points.
