'Unimaginable' ordeal for parents wrongly told son had survived car crash
South Yorkshire Police referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct after misidentifying a fatal crash victim, causing distress and prompting arrests.
- On December 13, a silver Toyota Corolla veered off Todwick Road near Rotherham, and South Yorkshire Police initially misidentified the fatal crash victims, confusing 17-year-old Trevor Wynn with 18-year-old Joshua Johnson.
- Because the injured teenager was sedated and seriously hurt, Trevor Wynn's family visited the patient every day for three weeks without realising the mix-up, while a friend who alerted Johnson's parents prompted forensic identification teams to uncover the error on Sunday.
- Donors raised more than 1,000 for Wynn's family after they believed he had died, while a separate fundraiser for Joshua Johnson collected over 11,000, and Stoner pledged further events.
- South Yorkshire Police has referred the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, and an 18-year-old and a 19-year-old are on bail pending inquiries.
- Assistant Chief Constable Colin McFarlane offered to meet families, saying `This has obviously come as a huge shock to everyone` as the South Yorkshire mayor demanded a full investigation.
