UNH Reviews Diversity, Equity Policies in Light of New State Ban
- To comply with a newly enacted state law that bans DEI initiatives in public educational institutions, the University of New Hampshire has begun removing diversity, equity, and inclusion content from its materials and adjusting related policies.
- This law, passed last year as part of the state budget, prohibits DEI policies and funding and threatens to cut state funding for schools violating it, with a compliance report due in April.
- UNH President Elizabeth Chilton said the university does not believe it violates anti-discrimination laws and that all University System of New Hampshire communities are committed to fostering inclusive environments.
- The law prohibits teaching certain divisive ideas, including the notion that individuals of a particular race bear inherent responsibility for the historical wrongdoings of that group, and imposes substantial financial consequences for any violations.
- UNH and other system schools plan to balance law compliance with supporting students and staff, with general counsel providing guidance while compiling required contract lists by September 30.
