- On July 12, the World Heritage Committee inscribed 26 new sites to UNESCO's list, raising the total to 1,248 protected locations worldwide.
- The committee annually evaluates places with outstanding universal value across six continents, including North Korea's Mount Kumgang, after its 2021 application delayed by the pandemic.
- Newly designated sites include Brazil’s Peruaçu River Canyon, the chalk cliffs of Møns Klint in Denmark, Sierra Leone’s Gola-Tiwai forests, and the royal palaces commissioned by King Ludwig II in Germany during the period from 1864 to 1886.
- UNESCO highlighted that the Gola-Tiwai Complex contains over a thousand plant species, including 113 that are unique to the area, along with 55 mammal species, 19 of which face global threats, and notable animals such as the African Forest Elephant and the Pygmy Hippopotamus.
- The additions maintain UNESCO’s mission to promote quality education and lifelong learning by preserving diverse cultural and natural heritage globally.
