Unemployment Hits 8-Year High - 160,000 Kiwis Out of Work
- On November 5, Stats NZ released figures showing New Zealand's unemployment rose to 5.3 per cent, up from 5.2 in the previous June quarter and the highest in nearly nine years.
- Falling youth participation in the past year has increased as young people aged 15-24 returned to study, while last year's recession led firms to stop hiring or lay off staff.
- Employment counts reveal jobs lost over the past year total 18,000 while employed people number 2,873,000 and underutilised people reach a record 406,000.
- The data was largely in line with forecasts and is likely to support a 25 basis point cut in the Official Cash Rate to 2.25 percent later this month, Finance Minister Nicola Willis said.
- Looking across groups, young people aged 15-24 face an unemployment rate of 15.2 and NEET at 13.8, with 160,000 unemployed, the highest since 1994, and Māori and Pasifika unemployment at 10.5 and 12.1.
