Under new legislation, restaurants prep to post origin country for shrimp
The law follows DNA tests that found only 10 of 47 shrimp samples from 44 restaurants were American species, officials said.
House Bill 117 became effective on July 1, requiring all Georgia restaurants except those operated by state agencies to disclose if their shrimp is imported.
The law aims to inform consumers and benefit local shrimpers by addressing misinformation about imported shrimp.
The FDA reports that 94% of seafood consumed in the U.S. is imported, with shrimp as the most popular seafood.
DNA tests found that most shrimp samples from Georgia restaurants were foreign, with only 10 of 47 samples being American species.
