According to a new report by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), global public debt rose from $49 trillion in 2010 to $111 trillion in 2025. The report states that increasing borrowing costs are putting increased pressure on essential spending, such as health and education, in developing countries.
UNCTAD has warned that rising borrowing costs are restricting health and education resources in developing countries. According to the report, in 51 countries with 3.7 billion people, interest payments have exceeded health or education spending; these countries will have paid $1 trillion in net interest by 2025.
