UN Warns South Sudan at Risk of ‘Full-Scale Famine’ as Fighting Intensifies

UN officials said more than 7.5 million people will need food aid this year as fighting, floods and disease cut off humanitarian access.

  • Intensifying fighting between the South Sudan People's Defence Forces and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army in Opposition has caused a 40 per cent increase in deaths and injuries, leaving civilians to "bear the brunt" of violence.
  • In Jonglei State, 26 destroyed or closed health facilities have left 1.35 million people without care, while military operations in January forced more than 280,000 civilians to flee their homes near Akobo.
  • Head of the UN Mission in South Sudan Anita Kiki Gbeho reported that operational capacity has dropped by up to 30 per cent, as the $1.46 billion Humanitarian Plan remains only 22 per cent funded.
