UN Warns South Sudan at Risk of ‘Full-Scale Famine’ as Fighting Intensifies
UN officials said more than 7.5 million people will need food aid this year as fighting, floods and disease cut off humanitarian access.
- On Friday, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Tom Fletcher warned the Security Council that South Sudan "stands at a dangerous crossroads," with more than 7.5 million people requiring food assistance across all 10 states.
- Intensifying fighting between the South Sudan People's Defence Forces and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army in Opposition has caused a 40 per cent increase in deaths and injuries, leaving civilians to "bear the brunt" of violence.
- In Jonglei State, 26 destroyed or closed health facilities have left 1.35 million people without care, while military operations in January forced more than 280,000 civilians to flee their homes near Akobo.
- Head of the UN Mission in South Sudan Anita Kiki Gbeho reported that operational capacity has dropped by up to 30 per cent, as the $1.46 billion Humanitarian Plan remains only 22 per cent funded.
- The UN Commission on Human Rights expressed grave concern over bodies discovered in Jonglei during recent road works, warning that the human cost of renewed violence may be significantly greater than currently known.
