UN report details foreign networks fueling war in Sudan
Investigators said foreign networks supplied weapons, drones and up to 2,000 Colombian contractors, while more than 1,000 civilians were killed in drone strikes this year.
- On Thursday, The United Nations released a report linking foreign networks to Sudan's war, which has killed at least 59,000 people and displaced 13 million since 2023.
- Mona Rishmawi, an expert member of the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission, identified "a transnational chain of networks spanning several countries" that supplied the RSF with foreign personnel, training, weapons, and logistics.
- The mission documented the deployment of up to 2,000 former Colombian military contractors operating drones and advanced weapons alongside RSF units in Darfur and Kordofan, while foreign-supplied drones expanded the Sudanese army's capabilities.
- Mohamad Chande Othman, Chair of the Fact-Finding Mission, urged the Security Council to extend the arms embargo to all of Sudan, noting that while Chad and Colombia cooperated, others provided "no substantive response."
- The report emphasizes "strict international legal obligations" for states to investigate illicit networks, as protecting civilians in Sudan requires action against the individuals and entities enabling the war's continuation.
