UN fears hundreds of migrants missing or dead in Med shipwrecks since start of 2026
The International Organization for Migration reported over 100 deaths and hundreds missing from shipwrecks amid stormy conditions, highlighting ongoing risks of smuggling in the Central Mediterranean.
- The IOM warned Monday that hundreds of migrants may be missing or feared dead after multiple deadly shipwrecks in the central Mediterranean, with several boats involved over the past 10 days.
- Severe weather has, the agency warned, significantly hampered search-and-rescue operations as Cyclone Harry hit the Mediterranean and sending people to sea during the storm was `reprehensible`, the IOM said.
- IOM spokesman Jorge Galindo told AFP there were three shipwrecks on January 23 and 25 with potentially at least 104 deaths; three deaths were confirmed in Lampedusa from a boat that left Sfax, including twin girls who died shortly before disembarkation.
- The agency urged international action to dismantle criminal smuggling networks, warning the final toll may be significantly higher and stressing smuggling migrants on unseaworthy boats is a criminal act.
- The IOM highlighted that the Central Mediterranean remains the deadliest migration corridor, with at least 1,340 people losing their lives last year, and is investigating nine boats from Tunisia between January 14 and 21 with around 380 people onboard.
