Uganda: PFF Condemns Martha Karua Deportation
Ugandan immigration officials blocked the Kenyan lawyer without explanation as she arrived to join a defense team in a high-profile treason case.
- On Monday, Ugandan authorities denied entry to Senior Counsel Martha Karua at Entebbe International Airport as she arrived to join the legal team representing Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago during his bail ruling.
- Karua serves as lead counsel for opposition politician Kizza Besigye and Hajj Obeid Lutale, traveling to Kampala to support the defense team of Lukwago, who faces charges of misprision of treason.
- Law Society President Charles Kanjama, who accompanied the group, was cleared by immigration officials; Kanjama said it was "of particular concern" that Karua was blocked, despite traveling "for the same matter and in the same professional capacity."
- ULS Deputy President Antony Asiimwe confirmed that immigration authorities provided no justification for the deportation, which occurred minutes before the Makindye Chief Magistrate's Court convened for Lukwago's bail ruling.
- This incident follows Karua's deportation from Tanzania last year and coincides with regional debate over the military arraignment of Besigye and Lutale, while Uganda's immigration authorities have not responded to requests for comment.
