Patricia Greene, Longest-Serving Archers Star, Dies at 95
BBC Radio 4 said Greene was a constant companion to listeners for nearly 70 years and the longest-serving cast member on The Archers.
On Friday, the BBC announced that Patricia Greene, the longest-serving actor in a soap opera, has died at 94. Greene held the role of Jill Archer in The Archers since 1957.
Born in Derby, Greene defied tutors who told her she would "never broadcast" to secure the role of Jill in 1957. Her 70-year tenure established her as a symbol of stability in British broadcasting.
The Archers Editor Jeremy Howe praised Greene as "raucously funny," noting her "formidable" performance as Jill. He called her a "singular" talent, unpredictable and brilliant behind the microphone.
BBC Radio 4 controller Mohit Bakaya called her contribution "outstanding," noting she was a "constant companion" to listeners. Beyond The Archers, Greene appeared in Doctors, Casualty, and Crossroads.
Fans expressed devastation on social media, with one listener noting they had followed The Archers for nearly 50 years. Ambridge will not be the same without her, as the production team mourns the loss.
