Ukrainian Investigative Journalist Mykhailo Tkach Detained in Austria While on Assignment

Ukrainska Pravda said the journalist was held for more than 12 hours as Austrian authorities investigated suspected spying claims involving two other Ukrainians.

  • On Thursday, October 8, investigative journalist Mykhailo Tkach of Ukrainska Pravda was detained in Vienna while on assignment. The reason for his detention remains unknown.
  • Tkach was tracking former Ukrainian prosecutor general Ruslan Kravchenko, who left Ukraine after anti-corruption agencies searched his office in early September. Kravchenko resigned on September 8.
  • Following the searches, Kravchenko filed a notice of suspicion against Semen Kryvonos, director of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine . He alleged NABU illegally seized case files.
  • Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi stated the embassy in Austria requested information from local authorities after a Ukrainian consul met with Tkach in custody.
  • Authorities have yet to provide clarification on the legal grounds for Tkach's continued confinement in Vienna, leaving uncertainty about the high-profile corruption case involving Kravchenko.
