Ukrainian drones kill five in Russia's Rostov-on-Don, target Taganrog, governor says

Regional authorities said the strikes also damaged apartment blocks, warehouses and a port terminal as Ukraine expanded attacks on Russian logistics targets.

  • On July 27, Ukrainian long-range drones struck targets across several Russian regions overnight, hitting sites from the front line to more than 1,000 kilometers inside the country, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirming the attacks as part of Ukraine's long-range sanctions strategy.
  • Russia built its war economy assuming distance would provide protection, but Ukrainian strikes have steadily eroded that advantage; previous attacks reached the Tyumen oil refinery 2,000 kilometers away on June 25 and a Bashkortostan facility at 1,350 kilometers.
  • Drones struck the Federal Security Service compound in Belgorod and Interior Ministry offices, damaging more than 15 parked cars and apartments, while the Rostov-on-Don sea trade port caught fire with five civilian vessels nearby and oil facilities near Sarapul 1,300 kilometers from Ukraine's border sustained hits.
  • Zelenskyy wrote, "This night our long-range sanctions worked in Rostov Oblast," saying the strikes reduce Russia's ability to finance the war; the Rostov-on-Don port operates at minimal capacity amid Operation MoLoChKa, Ukraine's maritime campaign.
  • Russia's Defense Ministry claimed it downed 276 drones overnight without disclosing how many penetrated defenses, while Aleksandr Brechalov, head of the Udmurt Republic, claimed air defenses repelled a large attack.
