Ukrainian drones hit warehouse of Russian online retailer Ozon in overnight strikes

The strike forced Ozon to evacuate more than 500 employees and halt warehouse operations, while Russia said 457 Ukrainian drones were intercepted overnight.

  • On Aug 23, Ukrainian drones reportedly struck an Ozon logistics center in Orenburg, Russia, according to Russian Telegram channels. Ozon is Russia's second-largest online marketplace and main competitor to Wildberries.
  • Ukraine's military appears to have shifted focus from Wildberries to Ozon after months of strikes on the rival company. Officials justify the attacks on the grounds that Ozon sells goods to the Russian military.
  • Orenburg sits approximately 1,000 kilometers from the Russia-Ukraine border. Photos posted to social media purport to show smoke rising from the warehouse, though the full extent of damage remains unclear.
  • Following the Aug 22 attack on Samara Oblast, the Defense Ministry stated, "Systematic strikes on storage centers for dual-use goods are making it more difficult for the enemy to operate."
  • Elsewhere, a massive blaze erupted at a warehouse in the Kolpino district near Petersburg overnight on Aug 22, engulfing at least 82,000 square metres. The incident preceded the Orenburg strike by hours.
