Lithuania Deploys Ukrainian-Made System to Detect Low-Flying Objects
The pilot system uses artificial intelligence to detect and classify low-flying drones and cruise missiles in real time, the Defence Ministry said.
- On Friday, the Lithuanian Defense Ministry announced deployment of the Ukrainian-developed SkyFortress system, an experimental airspace surveillance platform designed to identify low-flying drones and cruise missiles using acoustic and radio signals.
- Seeking to strengthen its air defense chain, Lithuania is adapting technology already operating in Ukraine rather than developing systems from scratch, Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas stated.
- Under a contract signed this summer, SkyFortress uses artificial intelligence to track and classify objects in real time, with deployment including processing sensor data via acoustic and radio-frequency digital signature libraries and personnel training.
- This deployment follows a September incident where Italian fighter jets operating under NATO shot down an unidentified drone entering Lithuanian airspace from Belarus near Siauliai, with similar incursions previously occurring in Latvia and Estonia.
- Trials will now evaluate the system's ability to detect and identify low-flying unmanned aerial vehicles under Lithuanian conditions to ensure the technology effectively complements the broader surveillance network.
