Ukraine's Oliynykova calls out Russian players on tour over invasion
Oliynykova said she has no choice but to keep criticizing Russian players and Gazprom-linked events after a 7-5, 6-1 loss to Diana Shnaider.
On Saturday, Ukrainian Oleksandra Oliynykova lost to Russian Diana Shnaider 7-5, 6-1 in the French Open third round, reading a prepared statement regarding the war in Ukraine before addressing the match result.
Days before the match, Oliynykova criticized Shnaider for participating in a Gazprom-sponsored exhibition tournament in Russia and accused her of liking Russian propaganda posts on social media.
Calling Gazprom a company 'financing the war crimes,' Oliynykova maintained that 'what I do is not about politics, it's about humanity,' asserting the silence on tour is dangerous.
After the match, Shnaider said she was unaware of Oliynykova's comments and played exhibition events solely to visit family, stating she remains focused on tennis and her game.
Since Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Russian and Belarusian players have competed as neutral athletes without national flags, a policy maintained across professional tennis and the Olympics.
