Ukraine’s battlefield optimism is ebbing as Russia threatens its ‘fortress belt’
Russian advances have slowed, but heavy strikes and drone attacks are weakening Ukraine’s eastern strongholds and worsening conditions for nearly 93,000 civilians, officials said.
- Russia currently occupies about 81% of Donetsk as the regional fortress belt erodes under daily barrages of guided bombs and drones striking Kramatorsk. Iryna Rybakova, a press officer with Ukraine's 93rd mechanized brigade, told CNN on Monday that dozens of cars and buildings have been hit.
- Nearly 93,000 Ukrainians, including more than 4,800 children, remain in Kyiv-controlled areas where life is increasingly difficult. Evacuation efforts have become nearly impossible as mined roads and drones force rescuers to operate on foot about 10 kilometers from frontline villages.
- Western intelligence services estimate Russia loses some 40,000 troops monthly, roughly 340 casualties per square kilometer. Despite these high costs, Moscow advanced into about 124 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory in August, according to the Institute for the Study of War.
- President Donald Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner visited Kyiv on Sunday without achieving a major breakthrough. Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov reported that Putin claimed the Russian army was making "tangible advances" on the battlefield.
- Following 14 previous failed deadlines, Putin reportedly expects Russian forces to seize the remainder of the two regions by year-end. Past sieges of Bakhmut and Pokrovsk suggest that if successful, the remaining cities would likely be left completely destroyed.
