EU Chief Von Der Leyen Speaks with Modi, Says 'India Has Important Role in Ending Ukraine War'
India and the European Union reaffirmed their commitment to conclude free trade agreement talks by year-end while emphasizing India’s strategic role in mediating the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
- On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a joint telephone call with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa, who said India has an important role in ending the Russia-Ukraine war and noted its engagement with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
- Following Modi's detailed talks in Tianjin earlier this week with Russian President Vladimir Putin, this top-level India–EU conversation occurred after US President Donald Trump last week imposed 50 per cent tariffs on India as it seeks to balance traditional partnerships with its strategic autonomy.
- Leaders noted progress across trade and technology sectors, welcoming advances in investment, sustainability, supply chain resilience, and reaffirming commitment to the India–EU Free Trade Agreement and IMEEC implementation.
- External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar followed up by speaking with Ukraine's Andrii Sybih after the leaders pledged to seal the India–EU free trade deal by December.
- Looking ahead, officials said they plan to finalise a joint strategic agenda at the next EU–India summit in early 2026, with India reiterating support for early peace amid global security and economic stability concerns.
