Ukraine strikes 2 Russian fighters, air defense assets in Krasnodar Krai, drone commander says

Ukrainian forces said 14 targets were hit, including two fighter jets, an Orion drone and multiple air-defense systems, in a one-day sweep.

  • On Sunday, August 23, 2026, the Unmanned Systems Forces struck 14 Russian military targets across the Rostov and Krasnodar regions, as well as occupied Crimea, commander Robert "Magyar" Brovdi reported.
  • These strikes extend a month-long campaign targeting sensors and launchers guarding Russian airfields, pushing the USF's August count of destroyed air-defense assets to 20.
  • At the Vityazevo airfield in Krasnodar Krai, crews hit two fighter jets—a Su-33 and a MiG-29—alongside a large Orion strike-reconnaissance drone. The 1st Center of the Unmanned Systems Forces conducted all three strikes.
  • Beyond the airfield, the force engaged eight radar complexes, an S-400 air defense division, and two surface-to-air missile systems. President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed Saturday that forces destroyed a Su-24M aircraft at the Saky airfield in Crimea.
  • Russia previously adapted the Orion for launching Banderol cruise missiles against Black Sea port infrastructure, but the drone has been rendered largely useless on this contested battlefield dense with enemy air defense assets.
