For more than one and a half years the battle for Pokrovsk has been raging. Now the Russian army is said to have succeeded in conquering the city in Donbass. But the capture does not really bring Russia closer to its big goal, experts are convinced.
Experts of the Institute for the Study of War assume that the Russian forces have completed the conquest of the place. Also a Ukrainian army spokesman admits the loss.
The Russians apparently took control of the Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk in late January and early February. The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) has found no evidence of continued Ukrainian forces in the city in Donetsk Oblast since January 29. But Russia has made no progress in taking control of the devastated city of 60,000.
According to experts, although Russian forces captured Pokrovsk, they were unable to exploit the operation to make further significant advances.
