Deputy head of Russian Navy killed by Ukraine in Kursk area, says Moscow
- Major General Mikhail Gudkov, who served as the second-in-command of Russia’s naval forces, was killed on Wednesday during military operations in the western part of the Kursk region near the border with Ukraine.
- His death occurred after a Ukrainian assault targeted a Russian command center in Korenevo, located approximately 30 kilometers from the border, during the ongoing fighting following Ukraine’s unexpected offensive in Kursk in August 2024.
- In March 2025, President Putin named Gudkov to a top leadership role in the Russian Navy; he also commanded a marine brigade from Russia's Pacific Fleet engaged in the conflict in Ukraine.
- Oleg Kozhemyako, governor of Russia's Primorsky region, confirmed Gudkov's death, saying he died carrying out his duty and expressing condolences to the families of the dead servicemen.

Russian officer Mikhail Gudkov, deputy commander-in-chief of the Russian Navy, has died in the Kursk region, as reported by the Ministry of Defence, which has not specified the circumstances of an alleged attack in which this high post and several other military personnel would have died. The Ministry has merely said in a brief note that Gudkov has lost his life on Tuesday “during combat operations” in one of the border areas of the Kursk region.
