Australia delivers Abrams tanks to Ukraine for war with Russia
UKRAINE, JUL 19 – Australia has delivered most of its pledged 49 retired M1A1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine, part of a A$1.5 billion aid package to enhance Ukrainian ground forces against Russia, officials said.
- Australia delivered the first group of 49 retired M1A1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine on July 18, 2025, with more shipments expected this year.
- The tanks were pledged in October 2024 after Ukraine requested them, but delivery faced delays due to initial U.S. objections requiring formal approval.
- These modified tanks, originally bought in 2007 and replaced by newer models, aim to enhance Ukraine's firepower and mobility in its fight against Russia.
- Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles stated the tanks will significantly support Ukraine against Russia's illegal invasion, while Minister Pat Conroy said they meet Ukraine’s direct request.
- The delivery reflects Australia’s steadfast commitment to Ukraine and the global rules-based order amid ongoing conflict and stalled peace talks.
