Ukraine fortifies its filling stations against Russian attacks

Ukrnafta said it has added barriers, shelters and backup generators as station attacks rise and winter fuel demand is expected to climb 10%-15%.

  • On Oct 9, Ukrnafta and other retailers in Ukraine began installing sand-filled blast barriers and concrete shelters to fortify filling stations against Russian attacks on fuel infrastructure.
  • Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal reported Russia has destroyed more than 300 stations in the last six months, broadening its air campaign to target fuel retailers in Kyiv, Dnipro and Kharkiv.
  • Ukrnafta, which operates 660 stations, has deployed sand-filled gabions at three dozen locations in Kyiv, aiming to install these wire-mesh cubes in other cities soon.
  • Ukrnafta director Lesya Zharska said the company equipped stations with diesel generators and contracted fuel imports to prevent supply gaps. "When there is a yellow or red air alarm, we stop operations," she added.
  • Despite an expected 10-15% increase in winter demand, Zharska stated, "We will protect the facilities. We will restore the facilities." Operations are typically restored within days even after strikes occur.
