Ukraine does not feel abandoned by US government, envoy says

The U.S. State Department issued a formal diplomatic note to Ukraine after strikes on a Russian port damaged a pipeline affecting American energy investments in Kazakhstan.

  • On Feb 24, the U.S. State Department sent Ukraine a formal diplomatic note after strikes on Novorossiysk affected American economic interests, Olha Stefanishyna said.
  • On Nov. 14, the Novorossiysk attack damaged a major oil terminal, and on Nov. 29, the CPC's marine terminal was struck, forcing shipment suspensions; CPC connects Kazakh fields to Novorossiysk and involves U.S. stakeholders Mobil, Shell and Chevron.
  • Olha Stefanishyna said U.S. officials told Kyiv to refrain from attacking U.S. interests, and the outreach was not related to Russian military or energy infrastructure, she said.
  • The move signals U.S. priorities after policy shifts, analysts say, as the demarche followed President Donald Trump's halt of new military aid last year and the U.S. abstained on a U.N. General Assembly resolution Tuesday.
  • Stefanishyna warned some American investments in Kazakhstan were affected, while analysts say further CPC disruption could harm Western energy firms and push global oil prices higher.
