Ukraine contracting around 1,000 Patriot missiles from allies, defence chief says
Ukraine says most of the missiles will arrive in later years, and allies are being asked to release stockpiled interceptors before winter.
- On Tuesday, Defence Minister Yevhenii Khmara announced Ukraine is contracting around 1,000 Patriot missiles with support from allies and a European Union loan.
- NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte told the Ukraine Defense Contact Group that allies must boost support to enable Kyiv "to seize the opportunities it is creating now across all fronts and to defend itself in the skies."
- Khmara reported that while Russia has achieved no strategic gains along the 1,200-km front line, Moscow compensates with "terror against Ukrainians," while Ukraine faces a $27 billion shortfall in drone financing.
- Russia resumed near-constant drone and missile attacks on Kyiv on Tuesday following a brief pause, with officials reporting five people were killed in the capital and other regions.
- Most of the contracted missiles will only ship in the coming years, prompting Khmara to request Western partners provide additional missiles from their current stocks for improved performance.
