UKHSA Measles Alert After Adult Dies and Hundreds of Cases Reported
Health officials said most cases were in children 10 and under as NHS leaders aim to contact about 1 million families for missed MMR doses.
The UKHSA confirmed an adult with an "underlying immunological problem" has died from measles, bringing this year's death toll to three, with 883 confirmed cases in England from the start of the year to July 6.
Earlier this year, the World Health Organisation declared England no longer has measles elimination status, while England recorded 959 confirmed cases throughout 2025, with Enfield identified as the primary hotspot.
Health officials previously confirmed two children died from the virus in June, as all regions reported cases with 52% in London, 17% in the West Midlands, and 10% in the North West.
The NHS launched a catch-up campaign for children aged two to 11 who missed MMR or MMRV vaccine doses, aiming to contact around a million families via app, text, email, or letter.
Because measles is highly infectious, vaccination remains essential to protect those most at risk, including pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems; residents should contact their GPs if unsure about vaccination status.
