UK watchdog fines StubHub, orders refunds to 50,000 fans over hid
The watchdog said StubHub UK hid mandatory fees until checkout and ordered refunds averaging about £10 for more than 50,000 customers.
The CMA ordered StubHub to refund more than 50,000 customers and pay a fine close to £900,000 after finding the ticketing platform used illegal drip pricing between April and December 2025.
Drip pricing—adding mandatory fees at final checkout rather than displaying total prices upfront—was banned last year under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act. The CMA found StubHub violated this law by concealing delivery and service charges until the last stage of purchase.
Under consumer enforcement powers activated in April 2025, the CMA has secured more than £1.95 million in refunds and levied fines exceeding £5.7 million against businesses using hidden fees. This enforcement campaign reflects the regulator's commitment to ensuring consumers are not left out of pocket.
StubHub admitted breaking the law and settled early with the CMA, securing a 40% reduction to its financial penalty. Affected customers will receive automatic refunds averaging around £10 per transaction without requiring any action.
Executive Director of Consumer Protection Emma Cochrane stated that "hitting customers with hidden fees is illegal," as the CMA now promotes a 3-step checklist to help businesses ensure pricing transparency and prevent future violations.
