UK Grid Operator Warns of Tight Power Margins
NESO said the 1.4 GW shortfall is a routine precautionary signal as low wind tightens the system margin.
- The National Energy System Operator issued an Electricity Margin Notice for Monday evening, citing a 1.4 gigawatt margin shortfall in the UK power system.
- Such notices serve as routine, precautionary tools to encourage markets to increase energy margins. Neso utilizes them to ensure a safety cushion between power demand and available supply.
- Responding to the notice, industry participants reduced the predicted shortfall from 1,400 MW to around 104 MW. Neso confirmed Great Britain's electricity system remains secure.
- Weaker wind output, which provided just 8% of grid flow on Monday, necessitated increased gas generation. Gas frequently acts as a vital backstop when renewable production fluctuates.
- The margin shortfall is expected to end on the night from Monday to Tuesday when wind power generation is set to spike. This will relieve system pressure.
