UK unemployment rate hits five-year high of 5.2% as wage growth slows
- Statistics South Africa reported that the unemployment rate fell to 31.4% in Q4:2025, the lowest since Q3 2020, reflecting 7.8 million people actively seeking work.
- Formal employment gains of 320 000 contrasted with a 293 000 drop in informal jobs, while the labour force contracted by 128 000 over the quarter, Stats SA said.
- Most job gains occurred in community and social services , construction and finance , while trade , manufacturing and mining lost jobs.
- Including those not actively searching, underutilisation reaches 12.4 million or 42%, LU4 composite measure was 44.5%, and youth unemployment rate rose to 43.8% despite fewer unemployed youth.
