UK, Ukraine sign AI defence partnership linked to battlefield technology
The deal gives British researchers access to Ukraine’s battlefield data platform, which already analyzes more than 100,000 drone video feeds a month.
- On Monday, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a partnership in Kyiv, making Britain the first international partner to access Ukraine's Avengers Labs for joint artificial intelligence development.
- The agreement grants British researchers access to the Avengers Labs platform, which utilizes an annotated dataset of 5 million battlefield images to train AI models that currently identify about 70% of enemy targets in real time.
- Britain also agreed to share confidential designs for the Storm Shadow cruise missile, capable of reaching targets 250km away, to help Ukraine establish local assembly lines for the weapon.
- Defence analysts warn the deal may not bolster Ukrainian defenses in the near-term, with researcher Arun Dawson of the Freeman Air and Space Institute noting tangible effects are unlikely until next year due to manufacturing challenges.
- A Kremlin spokesman declared Britain was adding "fuel to the fire" in the conflict, prompting Burnham to respond, "Who started the fire? That's the question, isn't it?" during his first foreign trip as prime minister.
