UK to work with other 'middle powers' on AI security, minister says

Liz Kendall said Britain will work with France, Germany and Canada on AI security as U.S. firms control about 70% of global compute power.

  • On Tuesday, Technology Secretary Liz Kendall announced Britain will work with "middle powers" such as France, Germany, and Canada on AI security to help shape technology dominated by the United States and China.
  • Britain's AI Security Institute generated global interest after evaluating Anthropic's Claude Mythos model earlier this month, revealing security weaknesses amid fragmented definitions of "AI risk."
  • To combat conflicting guidance, organizations including SANS Institute, National Institute of Standards and Technology , and Open Worldwide Application Security Project formed the Multi-Organization Secure AI Coordination collective on April 21.
  • Kendall emphasized this collaboration does not weaken Britain's "deep, close and enduring relationship" with the United States, which houses five hyperscalers controlling about 70% of global AI compute power.
  • Britain plans to publish best practices for evaluating AI models in July at the next meeting of AI Security Institutes, as many countries have expressed interest in learning from AISI's ongoing work.
