UK Set for Higher than Average Temperatures Next Week with It Peaking at 25C
Forecasters said the warm spell will be brief, with southern England seeing the highest temperatures and drought concerns lingering across much of the country.
- Temperatures across parts of England climbed to around 25C on Tuesday, September 22, as high pressure drew warmer air from the continent, providing sunny intervals and marking a final taste of late-summer weather.
- This brief warmth occurred while much of England remained in drought, with reservoir storage at 56%, nearly 20 percentage points below average, the Environment Agency said on Friday.
- The Met Office confirmed the 25C peak failed to meet official heatwave criteria, requiring 26C to 28C for three consecutive days. The spell followed 2026's record-breaking summer, which saw around 2,877 heat-related deaths and 89 days exceeding 25C.
- Forecasters warned that Atlantic low-pressure systems would soon disrupt settled conditions, as a cold front brought rain and wind across the UK. Deputy Chief Forecaster Tony Wisson warned the frontal system could bring heavy rain to northern and eastern regions.
- Long-Term projections indicate a transition to autumnal weather throughout October, with increased likelihood of rain and stronger winds from the Atlantic. Meteorologists highlighted potential impacts from a developing El Niño, which may bring stormier conditions during winter.
