UK says latest US tariffs mean "no negative change" for British businesses
The Scotch Whisky Association said the tariff-free market is worth £933 million in 2025, even as new duties on other UK goods take effect.
On Friday, the United States lifted a 10% tariff on Scotch whisky, restoring tariff-free access to its most valuable global market. First Minister John Swinney confirmed the removal, ending the trade barrier for the industry.
Swinney's successful negotiations followed personal meetings with President Donald Trump in Scotland and the Oval Office last year. Trump texted Swinney, "Congratulations John- you were a very big part of my thinking on the matter of Scotland/Kentucky! President DJT."
The Scotch Whisky Association hailed the decision, noting the US market is worth £933 million annually. Producers lost more than £600 million during the previous 25% tariff regime between 2019 and 2021.
Simultaneously, the Trump administration imposed a new 10% tariff on other UK imports on Friday, reigniting trade fears. Industry experts warn British exporters face significant uncertainty under this new regime.
The GMB trade union criticized the measures as "ill-judged, potentially catastrophic for business," while analysts noted the UK risks losing competitive advantage to the EU. The government must navigate ongoing investigations into digital service taxes.
