UK reports rise in cyclospora infections linked to Mexico travel

- Cyclospora is a parasite that triggers 'explosive diarrhoea' and affects the stomach, UKHSA officials warned. The infection is typically transmitted through contaminated food, including fresh herbs, salad leaves, and soft fruits, rather than person-to-person contact.
- Of 52 cases with available travel history, 48 reported visiting Mexico, with many staying at various hotels in the Riviera Maya and Cancun regions. Infections were recorded as 30 cases in England, 27 in Scotland, and 10 in Wales.
- Dr. Philip Veal, Consultant in Travel Health at UKHSA, advised travellers to consume bottled water and 'thoroughly cooked' food. He also urged avoiding fresh uncooked berries, unpeeled fruit, and salad to reduce infection risks.
- Across the United States, authorities are tracking a broader outbreak that has spread to 45 states. The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention reports that more than 18,000 people may have been infected.
