UK police to investigate allegations Reform UK breached donation rules
Police say the probe follows an undercover broadcast that alleged £32,500 in polling payments came from a fake U.S. donor.
- The Metropolitan Police launched a criminal investigation into Reform following allegations of illegal foreign funding, triggered by a broadcast from Channel 4 News last week.
- Allegations emerged that Reform accepted £32,500 for three polls from an entity posing as an American financier, which was actually Verbatim, an investigative group conducting undercover reporting.
- Potential offences involve breaches under the Political Parties Elections and Referendums Act 2000, as foreign companies are not permissible funding sources for political parties, including payments for research.
- Following the claims, James Orr, Reform's head of policy, and Dan Jukes, a close aide to Nigel Farage, resigned from the party. Reform "denies any wrongdoing and will fully cooperate with the investigation."
- Detectives from the Special Enquiry Team continue to liaise closely with the Electoral Commission and Crown Prosecution Service, while seeking to obtain relevant footage from the broadcast.
