Police say asylum protest turned into 'thuggery'
EPPING, ESSEX, JUL 21 – Six arrests followed violent protests with over 100 demonstrators chanting anti-immigrant slogans and targeting police at a hotel housing asylum seekers after a sexual assault charge.
- In Epping, Essex Police arrested six people outside the Bell Hotel following violent clashes, Essex Police said.
- This week’s demonstrations were sparked after Essex Police charged Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu, an asylum seeker, with multiple sexual offences.
- During the clashes, protesters threw bottles and smoke flares at police vans, and Essex Police enforced a Section 60AA face-covering rule.
- Keith Silk, 33, of Torrington Drive, Loughton, was charged with violent disorder and criminal damage, Essex Police said.
- With tensions still high, a dispersal order has been imposed to prevent further alleged crime and anti-social behaviour.
