UK labour market cools further, online jobs data shows

Vacancies dropped 15% by end of 2025 amid rising payroll taxes and inflation, with 2.3 applicants per role marking highest competition since 2021 lockdown, Adzuna data shows.

  • Adzuna's December data showed vacancies fell 4% to just shy of 716,800, with unfilled positions declining 15 per cent from the end of 2024.
  • The chancellor's October 2024 decision to raise NICs, with HMRC data showing a 20.7 billion increase, and the OBR estimating a 0.2% workforce reduction, pressured employers.
  • Adzuna's breakdown showed fully remote adverts plunged to 45,581 in December, 42% lower year‑on‑year, while sectoral advertising for warehouse, hospitality, catering and retail roles fell sharply and competition rose to about 2.3 jobseekers per vacancy.
  • Official figures last week put unemployment at a near five‑year high of 5.1 per cent as employers surveyed cut early‑career roles, hitting graduates and young workers.
  • Rachel Fletcher of Morgan Stanley reported AI prompted firms to cut or hold about one role in four, with private sector activity expected to decline over the next three months.
