Travel Adaptors Sold on Amazon, eBay and TikTok Found to Pose Safety Risk
All 14 adaptors tested failed basic safety checks, and the charity said listings suggested more than 10,000 may already have been sold.
- An investigation by Electrical Safety First revealed that 14 travel adaptors purchased from AliExpress, eBay, Amazon Marketplace, and TikTok Shop failed basic safety tests, with worst offenders posing serious risks of electric shock or electrocution.
- Defects in these devices included missing fuses, oversized pin holes, and exposed live parts; some universal models allowed multiple sets of plug pins to remain live simultaneously, creating exposure to up to 240 volts.
- More than 10,000 of these unsafe units may have already been sold to UK shoppers, according to online listings. One Amazon Marketplace listing had almost 9,000 reviews, with customers reporting overheating and device damage.
