UK Fintech Funding Has Fallen to Its Lowest Level in at Least a Decade
UK fintech firms received £1.8 billion in the first half as investors shifted toward artificial intelligence, according to a KPMG report citing PitchBook data.
- UK fintech investment fell to its lowest level since at least 2016 in the first half of 2026, dropping to £1.8 billion while global fintech funding surged to £75.8 billion during the same period.
- Hannah Dobson, KPMG UK's fintech head, said it has been a "challenging start to 2026" as investors increasingly back artificial intelligence firms and seek "long-term growth opportunities" over traditional fintech bets.
- Late-Stage funding suffered the heaviest blow, falling 45% to $830mn, the segment that carries companies toward public markets. Seed funding nearly doubled to $145mn, while the sector recorded 42 acquisitions, down 25% from the previous six months.
- Despite the broader downturn, AI-related fintech funding climbed to £445 million across 79 deals, representing 25% of total UK investment. Mastercard purchased stablecoin payments firm BVNK for $1.8bn, the half's largest acquisition.
- Britain's share of European fintech investment plummeted to 22% in the first half from 68% at year-end 2025, signaling a sharp erosion of regional dominance. Second-half figures will not be published until early next year.
