UK fines Yorkshire Water $1.1 million for chlorinated water discharge
SOUTH YORKSHIRE, UNITED KINGDOM, JUL 31 – Yorkshire Water caused extensive environmental damage by discharging about one million litres of chlorinated water daily, killing over 430 fish in one day, officials said.
- In February, Yorkshire Water admitted guilt at Sheffield Magistrates' Court for contaminating a watercourse linked to Ingbirchworth Dike near Barnsley by releasing chlorinated water over an extended period in 2017.
- Failures involving a treatment tank led to the daily release of around one million litres of toxic chlorinated water into the stream connecting the Ingbirchworth and Scout Dike reservoirs.
- Environment Agency officers discovered 434 dead fish along a 1.5 km stretch between the treatment works and the reservoir, but they believe the total number of fish killed is much greater due to the extended period of discharge.
- Yorkshire Water received a £865,000 fine and was required to cover costs amounting to £34,979.79, in addition to a £170 victim surcharge. Judge Tim Spruce highlighted the company's significant negligence, which led to an extended and severe loss of aquatic life.
- The company apologized, reviewed its procedures, is moving discharge pipes to on-site lagoons, and announced an £8.3 billion investment over five years to improve services, reduce pollution, and upgrade water infrastructure.
